Launch Day!

AWWW YOSSS.
Finally got 'Bru & Boegie: Episode 1 - Get da MILK!' over the line, and today is launch day!

I’ve had an itch for years of wanting to make a point-and-click adventure game like the ones I loved in the 90s like ‘Sam & Max: Hit the Road‘ and ‘Day of the Tentacle‘, and I recently scratched it. I started thinking of ideas for the game whilst on holiday in the UK with my gf in October last year, sketching ideas and puzzles during downtime, and got cracking on making it when we got back, only really pausing for December holidays. The game was completed about a week ago. I used the Unity engine in conjunction with ‘Adventure Creator‘ (a paid plugin for Unity). The plugin was a gift I bought myself at the end of last year. I managed to stretch a modest 1-month game development grant of $820 from Free Lives’ Game Jam Dole over 4.5 months of full-time work, using the majority of it to pay friends who contributed script passes, voices, music and sfx to the project (thanks frenz). At the end of the project I made the game’s title track, writing lyrics for it, playing drums and bass, recorded my buddy Guy Zack playing cool guitar and my bro did some mixing and mastering.

I think the game’s a cool way to experience Bru & Boegie’s world! I have 2 more B&B game episode ideas roughly scamped out and would dig to eventually make a trilogy of games. I’m super stoked I managed to make it. It’s pretty much the first kind of substantial indie game I’ve released. Prior to this I made a tiny point-and-click test game in Unity to see if I could even make something, and it turns out if you spend time following tutorials, referencing the manual, reading online forums, and Googling when encountering problems, (and sometimes asking AI for help), things are very possible. It also helps that the creator of Adventure Creator, Chris Burton, is responsive and helpful.

I’m releasing the game for free because I’m an unknown in the games space, and would like to see what kind of reception the game gets. The hope is people enjoy it as much as I did making it, without price being a possible deterrent.

This process has got me to use Unity, and experience the full pipeline of making a game from start to finish, including its launch. It’s been cool.

For anyone interested here's the game design document I put together before jumping into production:

And here's the one page info sheet:

Both of these are included in the Press Kit attached to this post, which also includes title screen elements, logos, character sprites, collectable stickers, the video trailer, theme song, screenshots, and GIFs.
